“Give your old clothes a second life!”

KHZ regularly experiences that people who are moving, use this situation to have a critical look at their belongings and to select goods which will no longer be used and therefore also not be moved to the new address.

A fresh new home, a fresh start and frequently also a fresh (new) wardrobe.
Unfortunately it happens much too often that bags full of still useable clothes are being disposed of.

After some constructive conversations with the Dutch Salvation Army (Leger des Heils), it has been decided that KHZ will voluntarily support the ReShare project by collecting clothes.

Your advantages:
  • KHZ will collect the clothing on the day of your removal in specially developed bags.
  • You will contribute to society in a possible way

Leger des Heils ReShare will use the collected clothes for national and international care.

Some examples are:
  • Social holidays for people who normally do not have the (financial) possibilities to go on holiday. During these holidays the participants get the chance to escape their daily worries.
  • The project ‘Verkeerd Verbonden’ (Wrong Number) in Utrecht.
Employees of the Dutch Salvation Army are frequently contacting homeless people in the streets, who are avoiding care for themselves.
The employees of the Dutch Salvation Army will determine the best possible way to give aid to those people, whenever they need it.
  • In Lelystad the Dutch Salvation Army has a training centre for minors with behaviour problems, ranging in ages between 13 and 18 years old. On voluntary basis they will be helped with and trained in different skills, such as learning to negotiate, dealing with authorities and dealing with parents or teachers.
  • International projects of the Dutch Salvation Army, such as children’s homes in Africa and Asia.
  • Aid at disasters, such as the victims of the Tsunami or of the earthquake in Pakistan.

A part of the clothes will also be sold for low prices in the Dutch Salvation Army shops, or donated to people who lost their belongings due to fire or other sad experiences.

Ban on toxic gas containers

Dutch Trade Union (FNV Bondgenoten) is demanding a ban on the fumigation of import containers with immediate effect. Any containers that contain gas must be immediately returned or destroyed. Until the ban comes into force, every container must be checked as standard and fumigated containers must at least be degassed. The health risks for workers due to exposure to toxic gasses are unacceptable. The government is failing to take action however, and yet there are plenty of alternatives that make the use of these toxic pesticides unnecessary.

Action taken by Dutch Trade Union
A campaign in the final week of September 2008, during which FNV Bondgenoten made both employers and employees face the facts of the unacceptable risks of fumigated containers, temporarily put this item back on the political agenda. The stickers with skulls that were attached to containers attracted the attention of the media. Even more important was the information provided to drivers and to workers in storage units, distribution centres and warehouses in the form of flyers.
This has resulted in the following directive from the Dutch Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment. 'As from 01-05-2009 all containers arriving in the Port of Rotterdam with a too high concentration of gas, will be taken out from the logistic transport chain (Methyl bromide is mostly used toxic gas)'. According to the Ministry one may expect delays running up to several months before a fumigated container finally will be released to the consignee. Obviously high costs will be involved if a container has a too high concentration of gas.

We strongly suggest that you reduce or preferably stop fumigating containers. Do consider the massive impact and consequences this will have on your/our customers!
